How can I correct a Popeye Arm Deformity?
When a tendon in your biceps muscle tears, typically due to weight lifting or from direct trauma, the muscle can bunch up and form a large, painful ball on your upper arm if it is not repaired by an orthopedic surgeon. This bulge is called a Popeye deformity or Popeye sign. The term is taken from the famous cartoon character from the 1930’s who had ball shaped muscular arms.
Semi-Solid Silicone Implants
Patients frequently call and email us about correcting their popeye deformity on one side or on both sides. By using a semi-solid silicone implant on the affected side, we can achieve greater symmetry with an unaffected arm. We do emphasize to patients that we cannot guarantee absolute symmetry when working on just one side; but, we’ve had many patients that have renewed confidence and self-esteem with correction of a unilateral (one sided) popeye deformity.
47 YEAR OLD MALE – BEFORE & ONE MONTH AFTER
Biceps augmentation, with style 8, size 1 implants bilaterally after suffering torn biceps in both arms.
In cases of bilateral tears, we can place implants on both sides to increase volume and achieve a more natural appearance to the arms. We do emphasize to patients that we cannot guarantee absolute symmetry when working on just one side; but, we’ve had many patients that have renewed confidence and self-esteem with correction of a unilateral (one sided) popeye deformity.
